Quick answer
Uninstall emBridge, delete the leftover C:\Program Files (x86)\eMudhra folder, download the latest emBridge from embridge.emudhra.com and install it with Run as administrator. Then reopen the Income Tax portal, reconnect your token and make sure the browser's Apps on device permission is set to Allow.
The new Chrome / Edge permission most people miss
Recent Chrome and Edge versions block websites from talking to programs running on your own computer unless you allow it. emBridge is one of those programs, so the portal silently fails if this permission is blocked.
- On the portal page, click the site settings icon to the left of the web address.
- Find Apps on device (called Local network access in older versions).
- Set it to Allow, then reload the page.
If you clicked “Block” on the pop-up earlier, this is almost certainly why emBridge stopped working, even after reinstalling.
How to fix the emBridge error for ITR (6 steps)
Takes about 10 minutes. Keep your USB token and its PIN handy.
-
1
Identify the emBridge error
On the Income Tax e-Filing portal you see a message such as “There was an issue with emBridge. Please try again.”, or the DSC option keeps loading and never finds your certificate. This means the portal cannot talk to the emBridge utility on your computer.
-
2
Uninstall emBridge
Close the browser first. Open Control Panel → Programs and Features (or Settings → Apps), find emBridge and click Uninstall. If an emBridge icon is running in the system tray, right-click it and exit before uninstalling.
-
3
Delete the leftover eMudhra folder
Uninstalling leaves old files behind, and these leftovers are what keep the error coming back. Open File Explorer, go to C:\Program Files (x86), locate the eMudhra folder and delete it. If Windows says a file is in use, restart the computer and delete it again.
-
4
Download the latest emBridge
Open embridge.emudhra.com in your browser, scroll to the Downloads section and download the latest Windows installer. Always use the official site, not a copy shared on chat apps.
-
5
Install it as administrator
Right-click the downloaded setup file and choose Run as administrator. Follow the prompts to finish. When done, check that the emBridge service icon appears in the Windows system tray at the bottom right. If it is not there, start emBridge from the Start menu.
-
6
Verify again on the Income Tax portal
Reopen the Income Tax e-Filing portal, plug the USB token back in and try e-Verify ITR → Digital Signature Certificate (or Profile → Register DSC) again. If the browser asks to connect to apps on your device, click Allow. You should see a “Verification Successful” message.

Frequently asked questions
Why does the Income Tax portal show an emBridge error?+
The portal uses the emBridge utility on your computer to read the DSC from your USB token. The error appears when emBridge is outdated, corrupted, not running, or blocked by the browser.
Why must I delete the eMudhra folder after uninstalling?+
Uninstalling emBridge often leaves old files in C:\Program Files (x86)\eMudhra. A fresh install can pick these up again, so the same error comes back. Deleting the folder gives a clean install.
What is the 'Apps on device' permission?+
It is a newer Chrome and Edge permission that controls whether a website may talk to programs running on your own computer. emBridge is such a program, so it must be set to Allow for the Income Tax portal. Older browser versions call it Local network access.
Can I e-verify my ITR without DSC if emBridge keeps failing?+
Individuals can usually e-verify using Aadhaar OTP or net banking instead. Taxpayers whose return must be verified with a DSC, such as companies and audit cases, need to fix emBridge or get remote help.
Do I need to register my DSC again after renewal?+
Yes. A renewed DSC is a new certificate, so register it on the Income Tax portal under Profile → Register DSC before using it to verify returns.
Does this work on Mac?+
These steps are for Windows, where the error is most common. On Mac, remove the old emBridge, install the latest Mac version from the official emBridge site and allow it in Security settings. Contact us if you need help.
