DSC stands for Digital Signature Certificate. Here's what that actually means, why you need one, and how to get it.
It's an electronic credential, issued by a licensed Certifying Authority, that proves your identity online and lets you sign documents digitally with the same legal standing as a handwritten signature. Instead of physically signing a paper form, your DSC creates a cryptographic signature that's tied to your verified identity and tamper-evident, nobody can alter the document after you've signed it without the signature breaking.
In India, DSCs are what let you file returns on MCA, GST, and Income Tax portals, register on ICEGATE for customs, bid on GeM tenders, and sign countless other government and business filings entirely online.
Most government e-filing portals in India now require a DSC for anything beyond the most basic transactions. Company directors need one for MCA filings, businesses need one for GST returns and e-invoicing, exporters and importers need one for ICEGATE and DGFT, and vendors need one to bid on government tenders through GeM.

Not quite, an e-signature is the broader category. A DSC is a specific, certificate-based type of electronic signature, issued by a licensed Certifying Authority, that's required for many official Indian government filings.
Class 2 DSCs were discontinued on 1 January 2021. Class 3 is now the only class issued in India, and it's what's required across every major portal, MCA, GST, Income Tax, ICEGATE and more.
You choose 1, 2 or 3 year validity when you apply. Once it expires, you'll need to renew, or apply fresh if it's already lapsed.
