First, confirm you have the right tool

A common point of confusion: GST uses emSigner, while the Income Tax portal and MCA V3 both use emBridge (installed via the emSigner.msi setup file shown below). Installing or troubleshooting the wrong middleware won't fix an MCA signing issue, however similar the names sound.

Installing emSigner & associating your DSC on MCA

Follow every step in order, screenshots included, so nothing gets missed.

Find the Web Socket Installer on MCA's Help & FAQs

On the MCA portal, go to Help & FAQs → DSC → DSC System Requirement. Under "Downloading and Installing the Web Socket Installer", you'll find the link to get the setup file.

Download from the DSC Registration page

The FAQ answer links straight to the DSC Registration page of the MCA portal, click through and download emSigner.msi from there.

Open the downloaded emSigner.msi file

In your Downloads folder, find emSigner.msi and double-click it to launch the setup wizard.

Start the Setup Wizard

The emSigner Setup Wizard opens with a welcome screen. Click Next to continue.

Choose the installation folder

Leave the default folder (C:\emSigner\) as is, unless you have a specific reason to change it, then click Next.

Install

Click Install to begin. If Windows shows a permission prompt, allow it, this is expected for signing software.

Finish the wizard

Once installation completes, click Finish to close the wizard.

Run emSigner as Administrator, every time

This is the step most people skip. Right-click the emSigner icon on your desktop and choose Run as administrator. It needs to be running (even minimized) whenever you sign on MCA.

Go to Associate DSC on MCA Services

Log in to the MCA V3 portal, open the MCA Services menu, and select Associate DSC. Make sure emSigner is running and your token is plugged in before you proceed.

Confirm your certificate and register

Select your token from the dropdown, confirm your name matches the certificate details, enter your DSC PIN, and click Register. You're now associated and ready to sign.

Already installed but still stuck? Quick fixes in order

Work through these before reinstalling from scratch.

Uninstall the existing emBridge/emSigner via Control Panel > Programs and Features, completely, before reinstalling.

Download a fresh copy from the MCA portal link, don't reuse an old cached installer.

Always launch as administrator, a normal double-click often fails to start the background service on port 2015.

Reconnect your token and restart your browser fully after installing, then try signing again.

Check Java is current, if your setup depends on it, and isn't blocked by security settings.

Test the local connection by opening https://127.0.0.1:2015 directly, accept the self-signed certificate warning if shown.

The most frequent emSigner/emBridge problems on MCA, and exactly what causes each one.

The most common error of all, it almost always means emSigner isn't running as administrator.

"Please start the emsigner"

Cause: launched without admin rights

Right-click the emSigner icon and choose Run as administrator, then confirm port 2015 isn't blocked.

Browser can't connect to emSigner

Cause: the local service isn't running

Test https://127.0.0.1:2015 directly and accept the self-signed certificate warning.

Antivirus or firewall blocks it

Cause: security software interference

Add emSigner as an exception in your antivirus and Windows Firewall settings, then restart it.

Token not detected

Cause: drivers, store, or expiry

Confirm token drivers are installed, the certificate appears in your certificate store, and it hasn't expired.

Worked before, not anymore

Cause: usually one of three things

Check certificate expiry, browser permissions after an update, and that the emSigner service is still running.

No response when clicking Sign

Cause: signer window was closed

Keep the emSigner window open in the background (minimized is fine) while you sign on MCA.

Frequently asked questions

emSigner is used exclusively for the GST portal. emBridge (installed via the emSigner.msi setup file) is used for the Income Tax portal and MCA V3. They are not interchangeable.

Yes. This is the single most common cause of the "please start the emsigner" error. A normal double-click often isn't enough to start the background service, always right-click and choose Run as administrator.

Not necessarily, but if signing fails after a renewal, reinstalling the latest version is one of the most reliable first fixes.

Chrome and Edge are generally recommended for the MCA V3 portal.

Windows 10 or later, with Java kept up to date if your setup depends on it, and administrator rights on the machine to install and run the service.
