Be careful with repeated attempts

Most USB DSC tokens lock permanently after a fixed number of incorrect PIN attempts (commonly 3-10, depending on the token model), as a security measure to prevent unauthorized access. Stop guessing after 1-2 failed attempts, and get proper reset guidance instead of risking a permanent lock.

What to do if you've forgotten your PIN

1

Check your token manufacturer's software for a reset option

Some token utilities have a built-in PIN reset or unlock feature, check yours before attempting to log in repeatedly.

2

Contact your Certifying Authority or issuer

If the built-in reset doesn't work or isn't available, your CA can guide you through the correct unlock process for your specific token.

3

If the token is already locked

A permanently locked token generally cannot be unlocked, at that point you'd need a fresh DSC issued on a new or reset token.

Frequently asked questions

This varies by token brand and model, commonly between 3 and 10 attempts, check your specific token's documentation if you're unsure.

Some tokens have a manufacturer-provided unlock process using a separate admin PIN, others cannot be unlocked once locked, it depends on your specific token model.

The certificate itself may still be valid, but if the token can't be unlocked, you'd typically need it reissued onto a new or reset token.
